 Colossus - West Oaktown

Known for releasing many soulful, funky, groove heavy releases, Om has built a sizeable hip hop catalog with releases from such artists as People Under the Stairs, DJ Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz, J Boogie's Dubtronic Science, and more. Om Records' commitment to hip hop continues with Om: Hip Hop, kicking off with the upcoming debut release by Oakland based hip-hop collective, Colossus..

Having in the past supported the likes of Roy Ayers, Fred Wesley, Gil Scott Heron, and James Brown (playing bass in the funk band the Big Cheese Allstars), it's no wonder that 6 foot 8” Englishman Charlie Tate’s music sounds the way it does. A move to Oakland, California, in Oct '02, the purchase of copious amounts of second hand jazz and COLOSSUS was born!

Launching the weekly Slow Gin jazz and soul party in Oakland, Tate discovered some extremely talented local Bay Area MC's, four of whom are featured on this album. Theres Capitol A has worked with King Britt,The Roots Jazzanova,Mark de Clive Lowe & 4 Hero, theres Delphi, Azeem, and finally Regi B .

Created as a complete album with the original version for the jazz lovers and a completely remixed version for the hip hop heads, on listening, it's pretty self evident where “West Oaktown” is coming from….Hip hop but with a hefty dose of jazz, funk and soul……and as far as influences go …the opening paragraph pretty much says it all!

Recommended for fans of: The Roots, Digable Planets, Roy Ayers.

DJ Naughty - One Naughty Night In Berlin

Following on from the esteemed Eskimo mix vaults comes original DJ Gigolo Filippo ‘Naughty’ Moscatello. Having released various 12s for Gigolo, Goodlife, Ferox, K7! and Four Music, co-producing albums for Chris Korda and DJ Hell and remixing the likes of Telex, Fischerspooner, and Tiga, DJ Naughty has built up a solid production reputation.

However, here on ‘One Naughty Night In Berlin’ we get Naughty in his deejaying element. From Farley Jackmaster Funk house classic ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ and Patrick Cowley’s ‘Sea Hunt’ to the blistering techno sounds of Vitalic’s ‘My Friend Dario’, M.A.N.D.Y. v Booka Shade’s ‘Body Language’ and the currently massive Tiga Mix of Thomas Anderson’s ‘Washing Up’, DJ Naughty takes us on another disco-fuelled journey that joins the past to the present with consummate ease.

In 2001 DJ Naughty moved to Berlin and finished his first album ‘Disco Volante’ on Gigolo. After joining Terranova in 2002 he went on to do a number of tracks for K7!, and if that wasnt enough he celebrated his UK No.1 chart topping track, his remixed version of `Big Fun`, the legendary 80`s tune by Inner City.

His talents went from strength to strength, Naughty became the resident of local and infamous Berlin club `Cookies` and `The Face` top 10 recommended `F.U.N.` bar and has even played fashion parties for Karl Lagerfeld and the 50th anniversary of top-photographer Mario Testino amongst his global DJ travels. Now here on ‘One Naughty Night In Berlin’ we get to sample exactly why DJ Naughty’s mixing talents have become so in demand. From disco to house, techno to electro and the odd rock-out oddity Filippo Moscatello shows us just how he earned himself his DJ tag. Naughty by name… unmissable!

 Jaguar Wright

Philadelphia's own Jaguar Wright is part Ella Fitzgerald, part Jill Scott, part Minnie Ripperton and totally unforgettable. With a soulful and electrifying voice, Wright gained attention as a part of The Roots family collective, when she lent her vocals to several of their hit songs & joined them on a national tour. Soon after, Wright was tapped by Jay-Z to sing back-up on the now legendary MTV Unplugged Jay-Z special.

In January of 2002, Wright released her debut album Denials, Delusions and Decisions to critical acclaim on The Roots imprint Motive via MCA.

On Divorcing Neo to Marry Soul , she has enlisted the help of top production heavyweights- Raphael Saddiq, Scott Storch , Chucky Thompson, Larry Gold , James Poyser,TL Hotrunner and Carvin and Ivan to breathe life into her powerful, poignant words.

Jaguar wrote the entire album with the exception of "Flower" and "Woman 2 Woman" ( the cover version of the 1974 Shirley Brown classic). They give a consistently beautiful sound that fully accentuates her powerful voice. Four album tracks were co written with Raphael Saadiq. The premier single is the mid-tempo "Free," an impassioned cry to a jaded former lover who begs to be let out of their relationship.

One listen to Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul and it's evident that Jaguar is an advocate for gut-wrenching soul music...Jaguar Wright’s self-penned lyrics combined with her powerful, church-trained voice, provide a complex depth of emotion, passion and reality difficult to ignore.

Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul clearly demonstrates Wright’s talents and should grant her the notoriety she so richly deserves.

 NGV - Australia Select

AUS-TRALIA SELECT is the third in the CD series entitled "NGV Sounds" commissioned and curated by the National Gallery of Victoria.

The NGV Sounds series highlights the partnership of art and music and explores the way in which sound and design inform on each other. Each CD is compiled as an aural journey to be listened to from beginning to end whilst celebrating the Compact Disc as an art-form in itself. Innovative packaging, presentation and design with highlights from the National Gallery of Victoria's Australian permanent collection reinforce and reflect the sensibility of the music on each CD in the series.

The National Gallery Of Victoria was founded in 1861 and is the oldest public gallery in Australia. The collection of Australian art numbers over 20,000 items and includes paintings Decorative arts, photography, prints and drawings, sculpture, fashion and textiles and jewellery. It is a collection of great depth and complexity, reflecting the many
Histories of Australian art. In 2002, the NGV opened The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square, where the Australian permanent collection and temporary exhibitions are displayed over three magnificent levels, this is the only art gallery in the world dedicated to Australian art.

NGV Sounds Volume III is an introduction to the riches of the NGV's Australian collection with emphasis on work from the 20th and 21st century. Preview the haunting and unforgettable photography of Bill Henson, Peter Booth's compelling Untitled (Man on the Road) the all-Australian sunbaker by Max Dupain. The beauty and traditional craftsmanship of the Chinese-born Ah Xian's red lacquer head and colour power of contempory indigenous artist Tommy Watson.

NGV Sounds Volume III is… an exploration, an introduction, a snapshot, a collection of music that goes some way to capture the many colours of Aus-electronica. Its a sound that floats somewhere between the dance floor and the trip home.

Extensive linear notes accompany the art and each track on Australia Select but here is a taste of what you will find inside…

The film noir aesthetic of Sydney-siders Hi Fi Mike and Inga Liljestrom line up against the likes of Bill Henson, Ricky Swallow and Peter Booth. Mylo's remix of 'Breathe Me' is a reminder of the beauty that is one time Adelaide resident Sia Furler's amazing voice and personal storytelling. Some of the best home-grown dub of recent times comes courtesy of Melbournians Secret Masters and there is the exquisite new dawn of
organic electronica that is Deepchild's "Whats Going Wrong". Fee'Koh's reworking of Perth band Halogen creates a shoe gazing inspired nod to the mid 90's summer of slo-core sound whilst Ennio Styles 'Shufflehof ' stretches and purrs with pure smokers delight. The Modern Congress continues the electronic gospel daydream swathed in deep southern soul & jazz. Down tempo sounds are explored by Taurine, Crackpot, Christopher J all with exquisitely detailed production and completely different stylistically results none more so than the deliciously precise clik-house of Ubin. Stewart & Melville are awash in Frankophile pyschadelia while live favourites Mr Jigga provide a deep house nu jazz jem "The Reel" exclusive to the compilation. To complete the journey Bertie Blackman's raw and rich cover of 'Tyrone' provides a bridge from the soulful electronic flavours of this collection to the other worlds and sounds of the flourishing Australian independent music scene. And that's a whole other story.

So not a definitive list, but a calling card if you like of Australian electronica and beats to be listened to as an aural journey from beginning to end. We hope you enjoy the ride….

The CD Jewel Case is encased in a 100% recyclable and Australian made frosted polypropylene wraparound - to our knowledge the NGV Sound Series is the first time that this material has been used for CD packaging in Australia. Design is by Melbourne based company Round. PMS colours, fonts and casing dimensions are catalogued and presented as key design elements whilst the inversion of the traditional disc and booklet allows all components to play against each other.

Addictions are things that we cannot live without. An addict is someone who cannot live without the source of his or her addiction. For DJ’s, clubbers and party people, music is their addiction and Vinyl Pusher is the finest dealer on the block.

From pumping House to writhing Electro Vinyl Pusher runs the streets of Clubland and moves only the highest-grade dancefloor bombs: a selection of which are bagged up and ready to roll on this, the label’s highly anticipated inaugural compilation, Addictions.

Equally at home in a main room or your living room, ‘Vinyl Pusher – Addictions’ carries an unwritten yet simple warning for regular users and first-up dabblers alike: the purity of the track selection means that a single dose will get you hooked, so don’t play it if you’re not 100% committed to your choons! With high-grade club classics like Monroe’s ‘Gotta’ Get A Move On’, Deepface’s ‘Been Good’, and Inaya Day’s ‘Nasty Girl’ mixed with current floor fillers like Studio B’s ‘I C Girls’ and Tom Neville’s ‘Buzz Junkie’, Addictions is not simply the perfect warm up for any discerning clubber’s big night … it is the perfect big night.

With a solid reputation for being light years ahead of its time for musical premonition, the Vinyl Pusher crew have included more than a few future releases that are destined for the sort of universal appreciation that both industry and dance floor aficionado’s have come to expect from Australia’s most exciting and dynamic dance music label. To this end, Addictions boasts the inclusion of monster tracks like Armand Van Helden’s mix of Cerrone’s ‘Jesus Music’, Soulchip’s ‘Let’s Rock’, and Abysm’s ‘Future Love’; as well as ‘Flashback’ and ‘Trouble’ from Australia’s House ‘producer de jour’, Nathan G.

While dance compilations often claim to be ‘the soundtrack to your life’, Addictions claims only to be as it sounds: exactly what you need and exactly when you need it.

You need the world’s finest upfront House?

You want it now?

Then ‘Vinyl Pusher – Addictions’ is the fix you’ve been craving, and Australia’s leading House icons, Melbourne’s Andrew Padula and Sydney’s Alex Taylor, are ready to take you a journey you will never forget!

ES - Mixed by Satoshi Tomiie

Satoshi created a name for himself as one of the most renowned international DJ’s in house music, his Nu Breed mix for Global Underground was one of their best selling ever.

‘ES’ (pronounced S) , is Satoshi Tomiie's first mix album in nearly three years .Its a fourteen track opus stained with dark, chugging beats that sets the mood for a twisted journey into Satoshi’s dirtier crates and the first in a two part series.

‘ES’ kicks off with the progressive tech-house of Kevin Freeman’s ‘Time For Revolution’ with growling intonations and swerving synth clashes. Avenue D is up next with the looped acid frenzy of ‘You Love This Ass,’ smothered in menacing 303s that are kicked into touch by the predatory bassline and moody punk vocals of Sucker DJs ‘Banrock.’

The monstrous Roach Motel’s ‘This Beat Is Mine’ tumbles across scorched bass before Chab’s ‘You and Me’ drops eerie strings and ebbing klaxons. Slok’s ‘Lonely Child’ finishes us off, ushering in smoky vocals that drift around the gentle trickle of synth flecks.

As ever, 2005 is set to be busy for Satoshi with two mix albums, ‘ES’ and ‘ESB’ out before the end of the August and an in-house compilation of tracks taken from his own imprint.

Africanism Volume 3

Yellow Productions celebrates the release of its third Africanism album which reflects Bob Sinclar’s passion for African music. To pay homage to this art form, Bob Sinclar united the most prestigious artists on the electronic scene.

Africanism was launched in 2001. Although this project was meant for the dance floor, with vinyl releases only, it was an instant hit amongst all publics. “Edony” by Martin Solveig was a No. 1 club hit for over six weeks. So it was only natural that Warner decided to release the album on CD. As a result, 200,000 copies of Africanism were sold throughout the world. Africanism II was released one year after the triumphant success of the first compilation and met the same acclaim.

Both Africanism albums won a gold record in South Africa, which gave world renown to the project. Today, the “Africanism team” has become a collective, uniting the most prestigious DJ’s on the planet.

Bob Sinclar is the “master of ceremonies” for Africanism III.

This album notably features an exclusive track by David Guetta, Tim de Luxe and Bob Sinclar, “Summer Noon”, along with an adaptation of “Sye Bwa” by Kassav, with vocals by Jacob Devarrieux and Jimmy Sissoko, to mention a few.

This album’s success already looks as promising as that of its counterparts! The savannah and its enchanting music are calling! DJ’s, producers and musicians have come together to offer you a stunning musical and vocal mix.

Africanism reveals the amazing beauty of African music and electronic music entrusted to the expert, magical hands of talented producers.

This album is a voyage into the heart of the world, a fusion of traditional and contemporary music.

John Digweed - Fabric 20

John Digweed's name is synonymous with lush, deep, engulfing frequencies that move through a mix in waves.

'Fabric 20' is bookended by two records containing them; 16b's kick-free re-work of Pete Moss, and Goldtrix' blissed-out version of Matrix & Danny J.

John Digweed has pulled together some of the best house tunes from new and old to form an excellent blend of house and dub, providing his listeners with an opportunity forum to enjoy some of the best music the genre has to offer.

In between, John builds and blends a stunning set, featuring tracks that challenge the preconception of his tastes. Adam Johnson's bass-driven 'Traber' leads into Richard Davis' zany remix of Repair, some classic Rasoul stutterfunk, and Ralph Lawson's disco-tinged take on The Glass. Billy Dalessandro gets heavy and hypnotic; Bobby Peru provides the off-the-wall 'Venom'; Martin Solveig soars; and Freestyleman drags Slam way down deep. Peaking in the perfect matching of Angel Alanis' vicious vocoder and Josh Wink's low-slung Infusion remix, 'Fabric 20' closes out with Michael Mayer firing up Superpitcher's sensual 'Happiness', and Joel Mull's wonderfully weird and wired 'Emico'.

Bent - Ariels

Following on from their acclaimed albums 'Programmed to Love' and 'The Everlasting Blink', 'Ariels' is Bent's third studio album, featuring the vocal talents of Steve Edwards, Sian from Kosheen, Rachel from Weekend Players and long time Bent cohort Katty.

Very soothing and uplifting to the spirit, it also has that slightly twisted undertone that marks it as a Bent production. Whilst sometimes the tone gets sentimental or reflective it never gets too sombre, and there's plenty of happy mood music for heads that need de-stressing and nights that need the edges smoothed out.

Pretty from start to finish, Bent might be crazy, but their music is still right on track.

Bent will be touring Australia in February 2005 for Good Vibrations!
