 DJ Jazzy Jeff

The D-Team will be talking to DJ Jazzy Jeff after 9PM Friday October 3rd on JOY Melbourne 94.9.

Phenomenal stylus demolition is what DJ Jazzy Jeff is known and praised for. His masterful turntable skills gained DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith (aka The Fresh Prince) a massive worldwide following and unbeatable reputation. It also produced the long term partnership that earned them the kind of global notoriety that most artists yearn for. Ten million records later and swamped with accolades including multiple Grammy’s, MTV and Soul Train awards, DJ Jazzy Jeff became one of the early American Hip Hop celebrities.

As a producer, Jazzy Jeff has spent much time in the studios of A Touch of Jazz. As CEO and founder of the label, Jeff has filled the role as Philadelphia’s resident creative and professional inspiration for new talent in Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul and R&B. Having worked with the likes of Lil Kim, Musiq Soulchild, Little Louie Vega and many notable others, it is his production work with protégé, exquisite talent, Jill Scott and his own artist albums, the latest being “The Magnificent”, that have bestowed on him the adoration and credibility from reputable music circles and critics.

DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the best scratchers and turntable artists to grace the music industry. He is widely regarded as the inventor of the 'transformer' scratch - Cash Money named it, and Jazzy Jeff was the first DJ to put it on wax. He also created the chirp scratch, which can be found on “The Magnificent” album and "Getting Jiggy Wit It." In addition to this, Jeff is renowned as the first corporately sponsored DJ / Celebrity and designer of the first mixer to be made specifically for the scratch DJ, the modern classic – the Gemini 2200, or Jazzy Jeff Signature series.

DJ Jazzy Jeff will tour Australia for the first time alongside his MC’s from A Touch of Jazz Pauly Yamz and V. Sure to be landmark hip-hop events, the deck wreckin’, remarkable talent of one of hip – hop’s originators is something no true soul, hip hop, beat fanatic can afford to miss. An inspirational talent touring this October….

 Vicious

By setting up in Melbourne and encouraging local and interstate talent Vicious has inadvertently played a large part in making Australia a far-flung but integral part of the global dance music scene. Techno and House are still evolving and it will probably always evolve. Vicious's outlook is also always moving forward. It's a natural progression, the same as that of the DJ's who run it, - to introduce new music and to open people’s minds to new sounds, the fresher the better.

"We don't want people to see a Vicious label and say 'I know what that's going to sound like’", says John Course, co-founder. "We want to be diverse".

Both Vicious labels continually release new songs and push new talent with Vicious Grooves taking care of the funkier selections and Vicious Vinyl releasing the electronic sounds, plus some exciting new labels now within the network.

Naked Music - Lost On Arrival

Taking a conscious detour from Naked Music's previous endeavors, this new collection dives headfirst into the slightly off-kilter realm of dirty disco, electro-funk and dub house - rolling it all into a unique, nocturnal blend that’s ripe and ready for the more adventurous listeners out there!

Building on the strength of releases from dance innovators such as Chicken Lips, Daniel Wang, Themroc and Ray Mang as well as introducing the up and coming talents of DJ T, Unai and Trentemoller, this is a sure-fire showcase of some of today’s more intriguing artists operating just outside the beaten path.

Unadulterated funky beats and tripped-out atmospherics are the order of the day here. We asked ourselves a simple question: If we could step into our dream club right now, what would be pumping from the sound system?
Well the answer is right here… so check in, grab a seat, have a drink and prepare to be… Lost On Arrival.

 Deep Dish - Penetrate Deeper

Bureaucracy is one of Washington's greatest exports. Deep Dish is another, two young men who cut through the red tape and mediocrity of the underground with the sharpest of knives.

Before Deep Dish became world-wide dance music sensations, before the main stream recognition that has garnered them a Grammy Award and more, and even before they gave birth to their world renowned record label Yoshitoshi, Deep Dish were working hard to stake their claim in the world of dance music.

Penetrate Deeper represents the early days of Deep Dish and the then fledgling Deep Dish Records. The now classic compilation features the first four original Deep Dish Records releases ("A Feeling", "The Moment of Truth", "Relativity", and "Lonely Winter") along side the pivotal Quench and Special remix of Naomi Daniel's "Feel the Fire," produced for their long-time mate, Detroit's Carl Craig.

Two additional compositions complete the picture – the lush, orchestrated Elastic Reality, and "The Dream" by Prana – the apex of Deep Dish's career at that point.

After listening to these works, it becomes clear that, even at that early stage in their career, Dubfire and Sharam had tapped into a chemistry and bond that is greater than the sum of its parts.

 Hooligan House

San Francisco's Tango Recordings presents a selection of the labels finest releases since it began 3 years ago.

Mixed by Hipp-e from H Foundation & label boss Tony Hewitt.

Originally from the UK,Tony Hewitt has been dj’ing for over 10 years in San Francisco with guest spots across the USA & overseas. His collaborations with Hipp-e began when he & fellow like minded artists Onionz, Joeski , Halo & Master D formed the 6400 Crew.

The two have worked on many projects together & have recorded for Soma, Siesta, Shaboom, Yoshitoshi as well as their own label Nightshift Records.

Blast this one out of your car speakers: Flawlessly mixed and expertly programmed, Past & Present is a label mission statement that reflects the earliest Tango classics (the "Three To Tango" EP's "Primitive" is a highlight for sure) while planting its feet firmly in the sound of now.

Solomonic Sound, Joeski, Chris Lum, Halo, Onionz, Master D, Jay-J, and Tony and Blakkat's Lewis Twins project all make their appearance, but this CD is one of those rare mixed comps where the whole is actually greater than its sum parts.

 Hooligan House

HOOLIGAN HOUSE is a good old fashioned 75 minute mix of dirty twisted disco cuts from today's current acts.

Featuring the slammin' Andrea Doria's "Bucci Bag", Moguai's evil "You Know Why" and Tomcraft's huge cyber punk stormer "Loneliness", Hooligan House weaves effortlessly into punk house bomb Coloursound's "Come Fly With Me", Who Da Funk's hits "Sting Me Red" & "Shiny Disco Balls" and Felix Da Housecat's remix of Dot Allison's drug influenced "Substance".

But the real bang for your buck is in the New and **Exclusive** tracks that are set to blow up later this year from Da Hool "Hazy Crazy", Cicada "Edge", Karotte "As It Comes", Organic Audio "Touch The Sky" and Australia's own Mr Jigga with their 80's influenced "Set Me Free".

 Jon Cutler - Turn

Jon Cutler’s first mix CD for his Distant Music label showcases the best of what is known as the New York City house sound, exemplified by favorite sons Masters At Work.

Full of heart, soul and boogaloo grooves, these cuts totally reflect the mix of people and sounds that inhabit the mosaic of Gotham. Cutler’s own productions are peppered throughout the groove- heavy megamix and they shine.

“You Groove Me” is his percussive tantalizing hit with the infectious vocals of newcomer Kemdi.

“Dawn” is a sultry stunner that Cutler recorded with a full band featuring a talented and intricate flamenco guitarist.

Cutler’s own “It’s Yours” featuring the unforgettable spoken word interludes from NY’s E-Man is included here and has earned classic house status by now.

Afro-flavored tracks like “Yalopa” and Dennis Ferrer’s “Avareh” add depth to the mix but really every song is an anthem here.

Turn is full of dance floor fillers that make the perfect soundtrack for a very sexy summer night.

Erick Morillo - Subliminal Session 5

With 90s style house culture continuing to shrink, New York Subliminal chief Erick Morillo has clearly decided to go back to the disco’s basics for his next mix CD, delivering a superbly selected body of old and new disco.

Fearlessly choosing potentially way too obvious anthems (including Lil Louis’ French Kiss and Dan Hartman’s 79 smash Relight My Fire), Morillo’s nevertheless managed to deliver a fresh and contemporary, energy packed compilation that’s neither retro nor tired. And through its combination of sing-a-long anthems with equally infectious new disco grooves, Volume 5 is both effective for use as a party mix or for straight-forward at-home listening.

Still remembered by some as the brains behind commercial crossover act Reel 2 Real, Morillo has gone on to build a mini empire though his Subliminal records and club nights, though it’s clear from the quality of this CD that DJing remains one of his real true strengths. Starting CD 1 with the full length 9 minute version of Dan Hartman’s definitive disco love song Relight My Fire, he follows with Jeannette Thomas’ Shake Your Body, before segueing to two modern club tunes, * Funk’s Crazy and Harry Romero’s I Go Back (featuring acid house legendary singer Robert Owens).

CD 2 is similarly mixed between old and new with the emphasis throughout remaining on good time party music for serious dance floors.

I mixed this compilation with a Urei 1620 music mixer, 2 turntables and no special effects. At the end of the day it's the music that counts. Technology, technique and hype are all massive influences on today's music industry but soulful music will always be a mainstay in the world's music culture. Bar Grooves: En hiver
The Met Bar in London, Buddha Bar in Paris, the Hudson in New York… Bar Grooves is a new series positioned right at the heart of Bar Culture, and its associated lifestyle that has become the mainstay of every international capital after dark. Rebelling against the impersonal anonymity of big name clubs, the series provides a soundtrack to a stylish jostle free ambience in spaces where the cocktail rains supreme.

Guest mixer Rob Wood, editor from Jockey Slut Magazine, compiles the first disc, and Bar Grooves head honcho Ben Sowton selects the second.

Jamie Anderson - nite:life 013
nite:life 013 lands in the very capable hands of Jamie Anderson, a pioneer of the jazz and funk influenced tech-house that has picked up an army of fans across the globe.

Jamie’s diverse sounds can be heard on his debut long player, ‘Blue Music’, which was released on NRK in the fall of 2001, and this nite:life mix timely brings things up to date, from the deep opening of Spincycle’s ‘Drug Games’ to the brooding acid of Josh Wink’s mix of Sieg Uber Die Sonne, the old skool 909 shuffle of Barada and the soulful robotics of Cajmere’s ‘Sometimes I Do’ to the sweet reggae vibes of Miguel Migs. nite:life 013 is a varied mix and one that represents Jamie’s ‘no boundaries’ policy to music. The best policy to have, some may say….
