Nic Fanciulli
is a young and fresh DJ, producer and remixer - currently one of
the hottest rising talents in the UK.
Fanciulli started his career playing the usual round of bars and
worked in his local record shop in Maidstone from the age of 16.
His first break came five years ago after slipping unmarked mix
tapes to Maidstone's Club Class promoter. After the 3rd tape and
a 6-week hunt by the promoter Fanciulli was given a weekly main
room residency.
The same year
(aged 19) Fanciulli, along with some friends, started two record
labels: Portent Records and Portent Plus. The first track signed
being Mojolators 'Drifting', which was then signed on to Multiply
after Pete Tong played it for 14 weeks in a row on his Essential
Selection show.
Through Club
Class, Fanciulli has gained massive respect from DJs across the
spectrum for his unique take on house music. His style weaves through
all levels of house; laced with deep tech grooves, acid b-lines
and jackin' dark beats .
Xpress2 proclaimed him their tip for the top in October 2002, whilst
Tong said he was the finest resident in the UK as well as props
from Yousef and Seb Fontaine along the way.
In 2003, Fanciulli
has played for Cream in the UK and Ibiza, for Defected throughout
the world, for the Radio 1 weekends in Ibiza, Miami and Cardiff
as well as for the Radio 1 Outdoor stage at Homelands & Glastonbury.
Plus gigs at Shindig, The Arches, Circus, Type and he also started
a back-room residency with The Gallery at Turnmills on the first
Friday of every month. His room (T2), called Fandango, is purely
for Fanciulli to invite DJs he respects and to push the finest new-breed
through the ranks - so far including Rocky and Diesel (X-Press2),
Yousef, Paul Woolford, Krysko, MYNC, Mark Knight and more to come.
MTV tipped
Fanciulli for the top in their young-guns series @WMC 2003, he mixed
a covermount CD for Mixmag and in May, Fanciulli did his first ever
Radio 1 Essential Mix - where Tong described him as one of the finest
residents and best up-and-coming producers in the UK. In Dec 2004
this was followed up by the half hour hot mix on Tong's show !!!
Fanciulli's
production and remix work (under his Skylark banner) has also stepped
up a gear in 2003, pushing him through as both an artist and DJ.
His remixes of Jo Mills' 4Tune 500 'Dancin in the Dark' achieved
'Essential New Tune' status, whilst his remixes of Sandy Rivera's
'I Cant Stop' (Deep Vision), Deep Dish's 'Prahna The Dream' (Yoshitoshi)
and Xpress2's 'Muzik' (JBO) clearly illustrate why he is in demand.
In August 2003 Fanciulli once again achieved Essential New Tune
with his own production work (as Sky Lark) with 'That's More Like
It', - now signed to one of the hottest labels in the UK - Credence
Records and was released in March 04 complete with a re-rub from
one of the finest producers, DJ Pierre.
In 2004, there
were more remixes for Deep Dish's label Yoshitoshi, Chiapet's 'Westworld'
and Deep Dish's Flashdance coming, a remix for Paul Woolford's 'Mind
Over Matter' and a return remix for DJ Pierre's 'Turn It Up' on
Credence. He also released the follow up to That's more like it,&
a re edit of Tears for Fears 'Shout' that was widely acclaimed as
THE tune for Ibiza 04.
Ibiza 2004
proved another milestone in Nic's career with high profile gigs
for Pure and Yoshitoshi at Pacha, and a live Essential Mix broadcast
from Cream at Amnesia. Ibiza 2005 will be another massive summer
for Nic, undoubtedly cementing his reputation on the white isle
for many years to come
In October
2004 Nic was asked to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Carl
Cox, Moby and Laurent Garnier, by release a DJ mix for the Mixmag
'Live' series. He is set to follow that up by joining the legendary
compilation team of Renaissance, which includes Sasha, John Digweed
and Deep Dish, with a double CD to be released in October 2005.
This is one of Nics greatest achievements thus far with a four date
world tour accompanying the release!
At the end
of October 2004 Nic and Andy Chatterly launched 'Saved' Records,
the home of Skylark and Buick Project productions, and future releases
include James Talk 'Love That Acid', Paolo Mojo 'Raukus' and Audio
Fly 'Do You Hear', which features a remix from Zoo Brazil. 'There
is such an untapped pool of talent across the world at the moment
that I want to help the new kids coming through get the recognition
their music rightly deserves' says Nic.
Finally there's
the small matter of joining BBC Radio 1 as one of the stations resident
dance DJs. Matt Priest, the Former Executive Producer of dance music
at Radio1, quoted "We're delighted to add Nic to our dance
roster. He's a huge talent as a DJ, producer and all round top bloke.
He's our new 'resident' which means as a Radio 1 DJ he'll be part
of the Radio 1 family, feature in our dance events and you'll hear
his voice on air every now and then. We have high hopes for Nic".
Nic's show goes on air this summer and every 6 to 8 weeks thereafter.
By quickly
skimming over Nic's career achievements it becomes apparent that
whilst Nic has accomplished so much so soon into his career, we
haven't seen a thing yet!!
With the forthcoming
release (September) of his first full Renaissance compilation, his
CV will boast yet another prestigious notch.
Renaissance
MD Geoff Oakes says, "It's hard to think of another DJ and
producer who has exploded onto the scene with such an impact. We're
very happy to have signed Nic for a 2-album deal, at what I see
as a really exciting and hugely creative point in his career"
