From sell-out
shows with Sydney's finest at venues like The Basement, dj cameos
at The Sydney Festival Bar, to representing Sydney electronica at
the reknowned WOMADELAIDE Festival, it's been a busy year for Deepchild
(aka Rick Bull).
The third installment
in dubmeister Deepchild's trinity of albums,'What's Going Wrong?'
travels deeper still into the world of organic electro-soul, nu-dub
and experimental glitch-house textures...Nodding toward the aesthetic
of 70s soul and dub-plate productions, melding them with the peerless
talent of renowned collaborators like Andy B, live instrumental
improvisations and distinctly cutting-edge found-sound montages,
this eclectic mix acknowledges a rich musical history, and evolving
sonic future.
Handcrafted,
disciplined, idiosyncratic... Stronger than ever is the development
of what The Wire (UK) refers to as Deepchilds distinctively 'sexy
and addictive' approach to programming - micro vocal snippets, reconstructed
funk and warm session bass reverberate with futurist space echo
and snappy analogue swing. Part Motown, strongly political, and
nothing, if not sensual...
Deepchild's
recently licensed remixes of nu-jazz acts Amphibian and Sydney's
own Entropic also feature as special treats, as does the strongest
yet vocal presence of any Deepchild album so far. With pre-emptive
hype from several respected labels from Germany to New Zealand,
'What's Going Wrong?' seems to definately have it 'goin' on'...
