 Chris E

Born: London, England, December 1968.
Experience: 22 years collecting music and 20 years DJing.

History: From an early age he grew up surrounded by the sounds of Motown, Trojan, Studio 1. Soul, Blues and Reggae being his strongest influences. He developed a taste for collecting his own music by the age of twelve. Chris has been around the scene for a long time, and has built up a huge collection of music, including 70's Funk and Soul, Dub, Disco, Latin, Fusion, Jazz, Electro, Acid, Hardcore and Jungle.
He started DJing in 1983.

"Music has always continued to grow and develop, and there's always more to learn. Hearing new musical styles and approaches to dance music has, and always will excite the hell outta me!"

Soul music, especially the eighties flavour was Chris's biggest inspiration. The likes of Change, Loose Ends, Jam and Lewis, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, to name but a very few, were instrumental to his future.

"The eighties were my formative years musically. To hear artists such as these, delivering music with such feeling had a huge affect on a teenager seeking inspiration in life and love. It was all perfectly expressed in their music! That vibe has never left me, and it is still so prevalent in House music today."

His mainstay these days is House music, which he first came across in 1985.
"Early Chicago House and Acid House really shook me to my foundations as far as new sounds and energy in music were concerned!" he says. "I had to learn more!"
He concentrates on the Soulful, vocal, uplifting side of House, but you will always hear deeper, Jazzy, and Disco influenced sounds in his sets, as he loves to experiment with different sounds in his music. "With all that influence behind me it's impossible to leave any of it behind. After all it has shaped my musical path up to this point!"

Chris has enjoyed playing at some of the best clubs in London.
"Ministry of Sound and Turnmills, which I had a residency at for a while, were great experiences. There's not much that beats expressing yourself musically to a great room of people with open minds and hearts! It's not so much the venue though. The people make the music happen, they make the night come to life!"

Chris has done five years of pirate radio in London also, and has started down the music production route. He hopes to have released a number of tracks by the end of 2004 from his 'E-Soteric Music' studio.
"I'm very excited about the production side of things, which I see as a natural progression. For me it's the true way to share what's inside of me with a wider audience."

Melbourne, Australia, Chris's new country of residency, holds new challenges and adventures which he is all too willing to face head on.
"I've already done quite a few gigs in the time that I've been here, including stints at Revolver and Honky Tonks, and I always get a great reception. The Yum Yum residency, and night, is going brilliantly also. It's a pleasure to be involved in Australia's premiere soulful house night! The soulful dance music scene in Oz is young and vibrant. I look forward to being a part of it and aiding its development. I've recently started a show on Street FM (87.6) radio station, doing Sundays 3-5PM with my great buddy Troy. This is great fun, and allows me to reach out across the airwaves to even more people. To say I'm enjoying it all is an understatement! Bring it on! You know you love it!"
